Description
It's not often that I find myself within arms length of a Red-tailed Hawk or any other wildlife for that matter. It happened to me this past Saturday at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, Rhode Island. It was a drizzly day. I was driving about doing some birding when I spotted this hawk perched on a brush pile. Thinking I'd scare him off, I parked well away and began walking toward him ... snapping photos as I approached. Before long, I was only about 6 feet (2 meters) away! I seriously could have used my macro lens for this photo. He was slightly above eye level and sat quietly as I took several photos. I actually had to back up to 11 feet in order for my lens to focus.Canon 5D Mark ll

The wet feathers lend them selves well. Perhaps it was why it didn't flush?
