Description
I recently had a Close Encounter with a Black Racer. This is considered the most aggressive snake in the northeastern US and this individual certainly lived up to that distinction. It had plenty of room to flee as I approached it but rather, it turned toward me, coiled up, and on several occasions lunged at me. Fortunately, I was 10 feet away from this 6 foot long beauty. It never did actually move toward me but rather hissed and vibrated its tail in an attempt to frighten me away.Although this species can inflict a painful bite, it like all other snakes in Rhode Island is non-poisonous.
I find the grasses in the phtos a bit distracting but they were too extensive to clone out.
Enjoy!
Michelle

Could you not have cleaned his head with a cloth before taking the shot?
05/27/06 @445
shedding soon and just maybe his condition was an indication of his aggressive nature. Thanks for your biting comment.

edit: I just read your description again... I like the grass in the foreground, it adds depth to the image and I don't see it covering anything... I rather think without it, the image would be less dynamic (if you can get less dynamic than a lunging snake!)

It's nice to see portraits of snakes because it's a very unusual subject and they are hard to capture! I just love your works!

You are a very tough lady not being bothered of getting a snake bite...

That's a lot closer than I would ever like to be to a snake.

I think you’ve got the math wrong here… The way I see it you’re 10 feet away from a snake with a potential reach of 6 feet. That gives you a comfort zone of 4 feet.
Now to me, the critical measurement is: after it’s made its first 6 foot lunge how fast can you move backwards 2 foot before it takes another swipe?
I'm sticking with hamsters, butterflies and very small dogs.

but the shot is perfect, nothing to add
